Beluga whales are known for the distinctive sounds they make that can travel great distances. Whalers spoke of hearing belugas call to one another in the icy waters of the Arctic Ocean.

Because Beluga whales have been overhunted, they are now at serious risk. The most threatened Belugas are those within the Gulf of St. Lawrence, Canada, mainly because of water pollutants.
